"Choose."

She gazed up at him through blood-soaked lashes, her eyes tinted with tears. Reaching out for him... she always had. Why could she remember, but not him? Why could she love, but not him?

Why couldn't she be the girl he wanted?

"Choose what?"
"Life or death. Your kingdom or your heart. Choose the only thing that's ever made sense to you. Choose loyalty or destiny, or both."

His arms cradled her body carefully as he watched her slip away. Her eyes were clouded over with pain, something about them strangely familiar and exciting, tugging at the back of his consciousness with an alien pull.

All she did was cry. For as long as he'd known her, his princess was crying. She told him it was because she missed her prince so very much, but he knew. He knew he was that prince, and she cried because he could not remember.

"There is no destiny. Entropy took him away."
"Letting go is the key."
"I don't want to let go."

It was coming soon. They both knew. Acceptance was another thing.

Their last night was spent together, knowing it would be the final chance they had as a whole. They laughed, and danced, and cried, holding each other with the familiarity of lovers. And then, gently setting the other down, they made love, allowing every detail to carve itself into their hearts.

With her death, a new kingdom would be born of crystalline tears, one he didn't know how to be a part of.

"Choose."
"I can't."
"You must."

His head lowered instinctively, all the while his heart cried out for him to remember. It was not enough he loved her as she was. She needed for him to love her as she always would be.

Their lips touched and somewhere deep in his eyes a light sparked. Hoping furtively he could remember before she descended, it caught flame and grew into a faint memory. A laughter and a rose, and a dream shared as one.

But the flame could not last, and she watched with final horror as it receded. Choose the only thing that ever made sense. Find a path between loyalty and desire.

"I choose him."
